When it comes to wigs, the available options seem practically endless. Human hair wigs offer the most versatility, since the wigs respond to the heat of a flat iron or curling device in the same manner as your natural hair would. Still, with so many styles and colors available, you may feel overwhelmed as you try to select the right wig for you.

Here are a few things to consider as you choose your wig.

The Natural Color of Your Hair

If you want your wig to look complete natural, try to choose a color that is in the same color family as your natural hair, and don't go more than a couple of shades darker or lighter than your true hair color. If your have dyed your natural hair repeatedly over the years, you may have to refer back to older photographs that display your hair in its pre-dyed state to get an accurate depiction of your natural color.

A color that is slightly lighter than your natural hair will brighten the look of your face. However, a darker color will yield more dramatic results, especially if the darker color dramatically contrasts with your skin color.

If you want a sun-kissed look, try a wig with highlights. Some human hair wigs are died in a balayage pattern that is difficult to discern from the natural highlights that occur as you spend time in the sun.

The Shape of Your Face

The way that a haircut or wigs looks on you is partially dependent upon the shape of your face. You can determine your face shape by observing the widest portion of the face and looking at your chin shape. As you ponder your facial contours, consider the shape that would result from drawing an imaginary line around the perimeter of your face.

If your face is oblong with a long narrow appearance, look for a wig that is full on the sides and has a bit of a bang. The fullness will add width to the face, and the bangs will help shorten the overall facial length.

If your face is heart-shaped, try a chin-length wig with bangs and a bit of volume at the base. The volume with help widen a pointy chin, and the bangs will minimize the forehead length.

Longer wigs are great options for people with a square face. For the best results, choose a wig style that can be combed away from your forehead to optimize the facial length.

If you are having trouble selecting a wig, schedule a consultation with a wig specialist in your local area, such as at the Milano Collection.
