You may think that, in the world of cosmetology, your career really cannot advance. That simply is not true. Upward mobility is possible, but only if you are willing to take steps in new directions. When you want a bigger salary, but you want to continue working in this field, here are some options for you, as well as the steps you need to take to get there.

Teach Cosmetology

If you find it really easy to show others how to do something, and you do not get easily frustrated in the process, then maybe you should teach cosmetology. Cosmetology teachers earn a little bit more than cosmetologists because they have a teaching license as well as their cosmetology license. If you want to give it a try, there are plenty of places to take teacher training for cosmetology. It is typically another one to two years of education, but you would make more money when you have finished your training.

Own Your Own Salon

If you can manage business affairs rather well, you can own and operate your own salon. This allows you to set your own prices and wages for the professionals working for you, which in turn helps you figure out how to profit from your salon and earn the salary you want. You may want to take a few small business and accounting classes so that you know for certain how to run the business side of things in your salon.

Own Several Salons and Become a Name-brand

Finally, you could open, own, and operate a string of salons. When you own a string of successful salons, you become a brand-name. When you are a brand-name, you can command just about any salary you like. (One such example is Paul Mitchell; he owns lots of salons and has become a name-brand.)

Of course, you also have to hire the cream-of-the-crop stylists and cosmetologists to work in your salons, and you have to manage the business side of things very well. It will take some time to work your way up to this, so it is important to have a higher paying cosmetology job before you can even open you first salon. However, with a little practice, and taking some classes and baby steps toward this big goal, you can and eventually will make it if this is what you really want to do with your career.
